History of Powerwall
It was April 2015 when Tesla Inc. launched and introduced the first-generation of Powerwall as an entry in the home and industrial battery market, among the solar and utility industry. At first, this American company only designs and manufactures electric cars and vehicles, but with the world’s accelerating transitions to renewable energy, the company came up with new phenomenal technology called “Powerwall” which is intended to use as power energy storage for homes, commercial buildings, and other infrastructures.
It was stated that the slim-modular design of Powerwall was adapted and modified from the technology used in electric cars of Tesla. With its 7 kilowatt-hours of energy, it can power up a typical house for about 7 hours.
When it was first introduced in the market it only has a power output of 2 kW steady and 3.3 kW peak. In June 2015, Elon Musk–a cofounder and CEO of Tesla Inc., stated during the Tesla shareholders’ meeting that the power output of the Powerwall will be doubled to 5 kW steady with a peak of 7 kW, also adding that there will be no cost increase.
However, by March 2916, Tesla decided to secretly remove all the references and information regarding the 10-kilowatt-hour battery pack from its website. And eventually discontinued releasing the larger battery-pack-product in the market. Only the smaller battery sized design remains. This is due to market interest and demands, the smaller sized of Powerwall is much more prominent to the users compared to the larger one. With this, they decided to solely focus their attention on building and installing the 7kWh Powerwall. Moreover, developing its installation at home to make it as backup power, also.
Residential owners are most likely to use the 7kWh Powerwall model. Probably, because this one can last up to 10 years even daily compared to the 10 kWh model. The larger sized model is only meant for backing-up power to avoid power outage and disruption when there are huge occasions and events at home, and not for continuously charging and discharging. Besides, its projected life cycle is just around 1000 to 15000 cycles and with its nickel-cobalt-aluminum cathode, its main function is to serve as a power supply backup.
Whereas, on October 2016, Tesla Inc. announced that there were already 300 MWh Tesla batteries installed in 18 countries worldwide. In the same year, they unveiled the updated version 2.0 of Powerwall at Universal Studios’ Colonial St., Los Angeles, California. This newly designed model is made to ideally work with solar power roof tiles, that will be produced by Solar City. This version 2 has doubled storage capacity compared to the original.
Powerwall Types and Battery Capacity
Tesla Powerwall has launched with two model types. These are the 10 kilowatt-hours–model version for backup power and weekly cycle and a 7 kilowatt-hour–designed with a daily cycle battery. Both of these models are guaranteed to have enough energy capacity to power-up residential homes and other buildings. The units can deliver 2 kW continuously with a 3.3. kW peak at 350-450 volts and 5.8 amps with a peak of 8.6 amp.
Tesla Powerwall Battery Capacity
This Powerwall can store enough energy to supply power to an average residential house for both day and night. Its usable capacity is 13.5 kWh. Enough to use for electric appliances such as lights, television, laptop, washing machine, and refrigerator. The total capacity can be upgraded using a modular connection which can additionally exceed up to nine units. It depends on how much power your home appliances can consume. Or if you want instead of consuming all the energy instore in your Powerwall, you can just use it as a power backup option only.
Whereas, the Powerwall 2.0 has a continuous power capacity output of 5 kWh and a power peak of 7 kWh. Since daily capacity usage for daily cycle is 13 kWh
You will be needed to provide two Powerwalls at home if you solely use solar power and the Powerwall system.
How does Tesla Powerwall work?
Generally, its function is to store power coming from the solar panel system. This is commonly used during an out-of-peak solar time or power outages. But some solar users, utilize this product to get rid of the high-cost utility and to finally engaged with renewable resources.

Components of Tesla Powerwall
The components of the Tesla Powerwall include a Powerwall battery pack, inverter, solar panels, backup panels, and switch.
The most necessary component is the Powerwall battery pack, this one is used to solidify the power supply of your house’s electricity needs. While the inverter is used to directly convert the electricity from its direct current into its alternating current. This device is important to properly convert the electricity so it can be used for any appliances plugged into your home.
On the other hand, Solar panels help in converting solar power into electricity. Remember that this panel is always being partnered with Powerwall to maximize its function and ability. Lastly, the backup panels and switch, this one is only required for those users who will use Powerwall as their power backup system. The panel will allow you to know which appliances to be powered during a power outage while the switch provides electricity to these in proper situations.
Lifespan of Tesla Powerwall
Just like the phones and cameras rechargeable, the Powerwall battery cells can be recharged so many times before it finally degrades. Nonetheless, it gives both household and industrial buildings a life span of around 3-10 years.
Aside from that, it also needs to be changed every 5 to 6 years so it can maintain its capacity to store electrical power. And, its battery can provide reliable system service for 20 years. However, since it uses a Lithium-ion based battery as power storage at home, some researches stated that it might not even last on the given 10-year warranty period.
Whereas, the Powerwall version 2 lasts for 5 or more years beyond its 10-year warranty period. Plus, it doesn’t decline its storage capacity too rapidly.
Tesla Powerwall Device Specifications
Tesla Powerwall is a battery pack technology with a solar self-consumption, back-up power, off-grid capabilities, and time-based controls. This Powerwall weighs 251.3 lbs or 114 kg while its dimension is 45.3″ x 29.6″ x 5.75″ (1150 mm x 753 mm x 147 mm).
It can be installed on a floor or wall (both indoor and outdoor) and can extend its scale up to 10 Powerwalls. It has a usable capacity of 13.5 kWh with a 7kW peak / 5kW continuous power. While it’s operating temperature should be around -4°F to 122°F or -20°C to 50°C.
Installation of Powerwall requires wide knowledge and expertise on high voltage of electricity, and the installation should only be done by Tesla Energy Certified installers.
As to installation, one of the main requirements is a wall that can support 254 lbs/115 kg and can fit the 34”x51.3” battery pack. It should also have a 1’ clearance on the top and bottom part and 4” for each side.
To complete the Powerwall installation, every consumer needs to go over the three stages: Pre-installation, Installation day and Post-installation.
At first, you will undergo a site survey to collect your information and to check your home to access the required areas for installation. After the site surveyor gathered all the required information, the Tesla design team will examine the electrical system of your home. Sometimes, upon checking they will include some electrical upgrades to your system if it’s needed in the proposal. This is also the time that you will know the number of Powerwalls needed to be installed in your home, depending on your electrical needs. Also, you will then approve the design made by the Tesla design team, before proceeding to the main installation.
Additionally, you must prepare your home by clearing the ground, wall spaces where it was needed to be installed, and any other areas that the installers need to work, to ensure a quick and efficient installation. Also, installing Powerwall at your home needs internet access, it can be a wired or wireless connection. This is required to have so you can monitor your Powerwall system using the provided Tesla application. Through this app, you can easily identify your home router location, but to do that, you need to log in first.
You will be needed to be at home the entire day of installation to monitor and ensure that everything is fine. Typically, the Powerwall team will send two to three installers who will execute the installation plan. However, if you’re going to install a solar panel system as well to partner it with your Powerwall then there will be another set of installers who will be on-site to do the job.
Usually, the installation time lasts for one whole day but it still depends on the complexity of your electric wirings and the size of your desired Powerwall system.
Once the installation is done, the power will be out after 4 hours but if there’s additional electrical work then you need to wait for 8 hours or more.
After the installation, the Tesla installation team will contact you and give updates regarding the Permission to Operate (PTO). Be guided that the PTO requirements vary for each region. How much does a Powerwall cost?
Since the production of Powerwall ramps up over the last consecutive years, the company has significantly increased the pricing of Powerwalls as well. Besides, the availability of the product is quite limited in the markets yet there is a bunch of reservations. So the automaker decided to increase its price.
Moreover, if you want to install a Powerwall together with a Solar panel system at home, the typical pricing of a 5-kilowatt solar energy system cost around $8,500 to $16,000 depending on the required equipment and location. Cost of installing a Solar panel system to accompany the Powerwall system might be an expensive option at first avail but installing these two systems is a worthwhile investment.
Powerwall Product Price
In September 2016, The Powerpack only cost $445 per kWh whereas the 200 kWh energy system and 100 kWh power peak cost $145,100, which is the cheapest available price of Powerwall. By October 2016, Tesla priced the Powerpack version 2 limited system at $398 per kWh. While the last year 2018, the price of a Powerwall battery 2.0 cost $5,900. The latest pricing of the Tesla Powerwall went from $5,900 to $6,700 to $6,500. But this does not include installations, other system updates, and equipment like the supporting hardware which costs $1,100.
Tesla Powerwall Installation Cost
As to Powerwall installations, the current price is ranging from $1,000 to $3,000, depending on the complexity of your device installations. Price also varies if your installation involves a solar rooftop system/solar panels. As the electricians will do some required wiring works for the solar panels.
Tesla Powerwall Alternatives
Home energy storage becomes prominent over the past few years, and Tesla Powerwall made a buzz after it was officially launched by the Tesla Automotive and Energy company 3 years ago. But did you know that there are varieties of home energy storage that you can choose aside from Tesla Powerwall? Several Home energy company industries also offer a battery energy storage that you can use at home.
Eco battery was launched by Sonnen in 2016, the same launching year of Tesla Powerwall. Eco is also a wall-mounted battery designed for the home. This comes along with inverter and smart energy software. Eco is a lithium-ion-phosphate battery-based, which Sonnen believes can provide multiple grip options including electricity rates management and consumption. This energy storage battery also has backup capabilities.
Just like a Powerwall, it acts as a storage for extra solar power where you can use later at night. Homeowners who use a smart energy storage system most likely to use the Eco battery to increase daily energy savings. This battery comes in a variety of choices, starting at 4 kWh to 16 kWh. A 4 kWh battery costs $9,950 whereas the price for 16 kWh is $22,800. Be guided that the cost of installation for these two models is not yet included in the given price.
LG Chem RESU
LG Chem RESU is also a lithium-ion battery that is designed to store energy at home. LG claims that its RESU can be both a backup power storage and a system to maximize the consumption of solar power. Although it can be used as power backup this is not entirely designed for full-time use. Just like the other energy storage battery system, this works perfectly with a solar panel system. The RESU battery starts at 3.3 kWh up tp 9.8 kWh. The 9.3 kWh RESU10H price range is between $6,000 to $7,000, this does not include the cost of installation and the battery inverter.
Pika Energy Harbor Smart Battery
Pika Energy Company produces solar inverters and other clean energy products. Meanwhile, they have partnered with Panasonic to start manufacturing the Harbor Smart Battery. This a lithium-ion battery pack and designed for on and off-grid power storage. It is a smart battery solution that also works well with a solar panel system. Same with the other energy battery system, it can control and manage your home energy cost and can act as backup storage at the same time. If you’re already using a solar panel system you can easily integrate it to this battery through the Pika Energy inverter.
Pika Energy provides 10.6 to 16.9 kilowatt-hours (kWh) Harbor smart battery options. If you wanted to upgrade the power and storage capacity, you can install additional batteries using the Pika energy inverter for it can handle up to 60 kWh storage.
Tesla Powerwall Marketing and Sales 2019
Tesla Inc. stated that Powerwalls are now installed at more than 50,000 sites, as of the 2nd quarter of 2019. The deployment of the energy system storage (Powerwalls and Powerpack) increased by 81 percent, compared to the first quarter. Aside from that, the company revenues grew from $324.2 million (1st quarter) to $368.2 million during the most recent quarter. This total revenue came from both Tesla’s solar power and energy storage generation.
According to the company’s quarter 1 earnings statement, they were able to improve the production of their energy storage by 30 percent. Additionally, Tesla said that during the first three months of the year 2019, they had deployed energy storage with a total of 229 MWh.
Whereas, Tesla reported that the gross margin of the storage business and energy generation increase from 2.4 percent in Q1 to12 percent during the 2nd quarter of the year.
Tesla Powerwall’s Future
With the significant growth of the Tesla Energy over the past years, both solar generation and energy storage system are expecting to ramp up more in the next coming years with its upgraded features and ongoing development. Powerwall batteries are likely to become more prominent and efficient. Solar panels and energy storage batteries will grow in more significant numbers in 2020.
