Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania have created the world’s first photovoltaic circuit that is being envisioned to be used in next-gen self-powered touchscreen devices or even model the human brain. At present, the circuit can only coax miniscule amounts of electricity, but these amounts can skyrocket with small changes.

The circuit can produce one amp with one volt in a sample the diameter of a human hair and an inch long. However, only about 10 percent of the photovoltaic circuits on a glass side work, which if increased can increase the amount of charge being produced as well. These photovoltaic circuits can be ideal for other applications such as powering tiny robotic devices or running computer calculations at the speed of light.
